Fitness: Get Gorgeous

Outsmart Tangles

You may think that piling your hair on top of your head when you wash it gets you a deeper cleanse, but the habit can leave your strands in a tangled mess, says Jet Rhys, the owner of an eponymous salon in San Diego. Instead, gently rake the suds over your scalp and down the length of your hair with your fingertips, as if you were combing it. Distributing the shampoo from roots to ends ensures a thorough wash without the knots, Rhys explains.

The Hairstylist Says:

“Dandruff is most visible on sleek, straight hair, so during bouts of flaking wear your hair with either a messy part or no part at all to obscure your scalp. If you have fine hair, use a round brush or a curling iron to create bend and body, which will hide the problem.” Adding a little height also helps, so Rhys recommends misting your roots with a volumizing spray or aerosol hairspray. “These contain alcohol, which will also absorb excess oil,” she says. Resist the urge to brush out the flakes. “Instead, sprinkle a tinted hair powder that matches your shade onto the flaky spots to camouflage them,” says Rhys; she recommends the tinted Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder, $35.

American Salon: California Cool

Jet Rhys Salon  Situated in the fashionable Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, Jet Rhys Salon’s flagship location recently underwent a major redesign intended to update the look of the space while also evoking the feeling of the salon’s second location. “We tied in elements from the Solana Beach, CA, salon in order to forward the branding, but we didn’t abandon the serendipity the inspired the original salon,” says co-owner Jet, who first opened the salon in 1992 with partner Rhys. The functional and clean design of the 1,400-square-foot salon boasts a large cutting area with a vaulted ceiling and custom-welded work stations featuring large mirrors. The design also incorporates a new braid and blow-out bar, as well as flat-screen TVs hanging above the shampoo bowls showing the latest fashion collections. Staying on top of cutting-edge design is only one of the reasons for Jet Rhys’ continued success; it’s the duo’s passionate approach to hairdressing that makes all the difference. “Rhys and I are so lucky that we love, live, breathe and eat hair to this day, just like we did when we met at Vidal Sassoon,” Jet says. “We believe it’s not about where we’ve been but where we’re going.”–L.A.

Family Circle: Insider Tip – Wave The Wand

Wave The Wand

Recently I was griping to California-based hair stylist Jet Rhys about the near-constant case of hat hair that seems to plague me throughout the winter season.  She made a two-word suggestion that changed everything: clear mascara.  She told me that a gel-based formula would smooth those pesky strands at the crown and around the hairline-and it worked!

Oprah: How Can I Make a Salon Blow-Out Last?

How Can I Make A Salon Blow-Out Last?

A: There aren’t many things I’m an expert at. Actually, at this moment I can’t think of any things, except one: I know how to extend the life of a blow-out. Before I dwell too long on this haunting discovery, let me share my secrets (and stylist Jet Rhys’s excellent suggestions). After you leave the salon:

1 Keep your hands off your hair. And avoid brushing, too, adds Rhys. Handling and brushing distribute natural oils throughout your hair, which will hasten your need for a shampoo.
2 Don’t let the stylist use any styling products, and don’t use any at home, either. Most stylists look at me incredulously when I say, “No product, please,” but as Rhys points out, sprays and serums can attract dirt and oil.
3 In the shower, use a fabric-lined cap. It keeps your hair drier and protects against frizz better than a plastic cap, says Rhys.
4 If you need to revive your style, dampen the hair in front and on the crown, then spot blow-dry.

Keep in mind: When I ask specifically for a blow-out that will last several days, I get better results. Why? The stylist pays more attention, and uses a bit more heat, which increases the style’s hold.

Modern Salon: Color Shadowing

Color Shadowing

With variations on the bowl cut breaking out on runways, Jet Rhys, San Diego, California, Joe Randazzo, owner of Honolulu’s J salon and Yasmine Essa Brooks, Studio DNA, Los Angeles held a three-day Hawaiian teaching Soiree’ with the J salon team to perfect the cut and find the ideal color shift that underscores asymmetry. The model was a natural Level 3 with Level 6 gold-toned highlights.

V-Panel formula: 1 tube of L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel (4.65) Majirouge and 2.6 oz. of 20-volume Majicreme developer
Base formula: 1 tube of L’Oréal Professionnel Majirel (1N) and 2.6 oz. of 20-vol. Majicreme developer

Application: Create a deep, asymmetrical V-section, with the open ends beginning at the inner eye brow and behind the ear, and the point occurring just shy of the crown (this avoids a bright spot on top of the head). Work through the section in 1/4-inch slices, applying the V-panel formula from roots to ends. Outline the V-shape with cotton to prevent bleed. Then apply the Base formula to the regrowth of the rest of the hair, comb through to the ends and process for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse the Base formula first; then remove the foils and shampoo the V-shaped panel.

4. Want an instant shine boost and a sleek style without static and flyaways? Put your conditioner in the fridge before use, says Jet Rhys of Jet Rhys Hair Salon in San Diego, CA. “At a lower temperature, conditioner instantly seals the cuticle.” Her fave: Sojourn Conditioner Moisture with keratin cashmere protein.

5. The Middy–or mid-length, swingy bob–is your best go-to cut, says Rhys: “It’s like the little black dress of haircuts.”  That’s because it works for any texture, and uses minimal layering to frame the face.  The blunt ends should be slightly concave to add more movement.  That way, you can go wide at the sides without looking matronly or having curly locks turn into a bubble.

The quantity shown here is enough to work through medium-length hair; modify as necessary.  For easy spreading, liquefy the product by rubbing it in your hands, then pull it through damp hair.  If your strands are fine, thinning, or layered, focus on the roots to “add guts without weighing hair down,” says Jet Rhys, the owner of Jet Rhys Hair, a salon in San Diego.  The heat from your dryer will activate the product’s polymers to produce fullness and control.

Martha Stewart Living: Up and Away

Up and Away

When you’ve had it with your hair in the heat and humidity, a headband is the most refreshing solution.

Once the province of senators’ wives and schoolgirls, headbands are no longer for the prim. In fact, the latest pieces are distinctly loose and flexible, with little to non of the stiff look and scalp-pinching feel of their predecessors. “Headbands are as versatile as a piece of jewelry,” says Jet Rhys, a hairstylist in San Diego. They’re also practical, offering a way to keep strands out of your face, not to mention hide grays or oily roots. On hot days, they’re good for mooring buns and other off-the-neck styles, making relaxed updos look considered rather than slapdash. And they tamp down frizz. Headbands may have loosened up, but they still have things under control.

Easing Their Grip

Head wraps are sleeker (and more comfortable) than rigid headbands. Here are our top picks.

The Skinny
“Thinner head wraps are more understated,” Rhys says. So go for a thin one to emphasize your hairstyle.

Want to tress sexier? Here’s how, courtesy of Jet Rhys, owner of her namesake salon in San Diego, CA.

1  Embrace your natural texture. Whether your hair is straight or curly, don’t fight it, flaunt it!

2  Avoid ultra-styled cuts. Harsh lines and angles make you look dated, but “seamless, non-choppy layers are gorgeous,” says Rhys.

3  Get over your flat iron addiction. Sexy hair has lots of amazing movement, bounce and swing, while all-over flat-ironing gives you an unnatural, wig-like look.

4  This season, it’s all about texture. To get a bedhead-sexy look like Malin Akerman’s, wrap sections around a large curling iron.

Volume is hot! To pump it up, apply volumizer to your roots and blow-dry hair upside down.

6  Need an easy, sultry night look? Look no further than the ponytail. Tie it off at the nape, mist the tail with light hairspray and smooth on glossing cream. “The spray helps the cream stick, so hair will look super-sleek.”
